Ann Margaret A. Coching![]() Trying to fit in to the social media requires more than being knowledgeable about the new trace of socialization but also to the new language that circulates around it. New terms are popping out of nowhere, internet users would give acronyms to words, shorten longer words or even mix two words! TGIF(Thank God It's Friday), thou( though) and sepanx (Separation Anxiety), these are just the extracted examples from a bigger selection of internet vocabulary. Creatively rewriting such words gave way to the evolution of verbal language through technology but the dawn of visual representations of feelings, emotions, objects and events surpassed the advancement of verbal language. The emojis soared up high to the keyboards of each internet users and smartphone users around the world. What is an emoji? According to Adam Sternbergh in his article published at New York Magazine, emojis, are "small invasive cartoon army of faces and vehicles and flags and food ", they appear to be used as replacements and a creative way of substituting a certain idea or event. People almost converse using only these emojis, and they understand each other. They combine gestures, face emojis and food/objects to conveywhat they wanted to say to their readers. One good example, the TV emoji, a monkey covering his eyes emoji and a No Entry Sign emoji, means " SPOILER ALERT!". The TV emoji represents the show, movie or series and the Monkey covering eyes could probably mean that the user has not watch the movie or series referring to the TV emoji, and this could probably explains why a No Entry sign 🚫 was added to stop anyone from spoiling or blemishing shows that they had not watch yet. The popularity use of these symbols suggests that communication has moved into a visual future where a thoughts and ideas could be simply translated through these emojis and the whole world understands them.
